Pet Peeve Alert ... STATE TESTING

OK, I am the first to admit that I am WAAAYYYY over the top on this issue, but our kids are in the middle of state testing this week and next and I am so frustrated that I actually had a "fit" (yes, I raised my voice and expressed my anger) with our vice-principal. While I try very hard to control my temper, this state testing issue has pushed me beyond the limits ... and now I will vent!

I am simply stunned by the absurd attitude that has overtaken our elementary school regarding the state tests. First, because of scheduling issues beyond our control, the testing is almost three weeks earlier than usual this year. You would think, however, that the testing is 6 months earlier than usual based on the frantic, almost manic, cramming that is going on in the classrooms. Beachboy came home MONDAY (math test started Wednesday) with a brand new way of executing multiplication of 2 places and 3 places which he had never seen before and was told by his teacher: "this is the only way you can show multiplication on the state test". HELLLOOOO, are you kidding me? My response: "Beachboy, we will do this worksheet for homework, then you can forget this method until after state testing is done and we will go back to this method so that you understand what it is". His math teacher was furious with me, but I calmly explained that Beachboy could not change his methodology at this late date and I did not expect him to. [Mind you, I have been working with my son on my own based on state standards so that he would be prepared for the upcoming math topics, which his teacher, unfortunately, has not been doing].

Issue #2: we received a phone call Sunday Night from the school system "reminding us" that state testing was starting this week and we needed to make sure our children got plenty of sleep this week and ate a nutritious breakfast every morning because these tests are so important. IMPORTANT TO WHOM????? It does not affect my son or daughter's education ... as a matter of fact, if the school did poorly maybe the school would go back to teaching the basics which we parents have been screaming for for the last few years! Shouldn't our students be getting plenty of sleep and eating a great breakfast every morning that they go to school? And why does the school provide free breakfast only during state testing? Why not all year long?

I have begged, pleaded, volunteered and everything else I can think of to energize our administration and teachers to accept that they are responsible for the education of an entire generation of students. The students in their classrooms this year will only be there for one year, so no matter how tired they may be, or how tired they are of the material they are teaching, they owe it to our students to be the best teachers they can possibly be. I still get excuses and complaints on a regular basis...never, concrete answers or suggestions on how we can move our program forward and deal with our excelling students as well as those who are lagging behind. But believe me, the stress and pressure is on the kids right now ... "you had better get a 4 or a 5 on the test this year or else our school will not keep its superior rating"! That is not fair to a 4th grader who is dealing with a ton of hormonal and emotional issues as well as already has test anxiety.

OHHHHH, I am an angry MOM right now!!

You have no idea what you are talking about.

!. If the school does not score well they lose both state and federal financial aid.

2. Public school teachers cannot pick students. they are given them. Becasue of this they have to teach at a pace that all students can learn. The results of this are that the upper level kids are slowed to such a level it is hard to cover all material.

3. Parents are not all like you. Absences ae high, support is low and kids do nothing outside of the classroom to learn material. Teachers only present material. It is up to the students to learn.

4. You need to spend some time in a school to see what they really have to deal with. volunteer and you eyes will be open. I did.

Thank you for your comment, I do appreciate your point of view ... although I do take a 'bit of offense' that I have no idea what I am talking about. I do volunteer in my children's school and I have done so on a 3 times a week basis for the last 4 years.

The frustration that I am trying to express is with the whole mentality of "teaching to the test" and treating these 6 days as though they are more important than any other day of learning that goes on in our school. If I felt that the administration took the rest of my children's education as seriously as they appear to be taking these testing days I would have absolutely no problem with what is going on right now.

BUT, to pressure these kids to the point of vomiting & headaches is absolutely ridiculous ... especially when I know the number of days that the children have spent watching a movie, doing "fun worksheets", or the educational time was otherwise eroded by something other than the coursework that they should have been attending to.

I am completely with you on this one, beachmommy. There is absolute panic in our schools around testing time. Maybe it's because our local paper publishes results on the front page - right on down to the local school's name and how each grade did.

My kids also watch a lot of movies at school. I don't fault the teachers for that necessarily, but I resent the letters home at testing time telling me to get my child to bed and suggestions for what would constitute a good breakfast.

One of our favorite teachers is retiring this year because she says she can't take the pressures of uninvolved parents combined with a government who tells her what to teach, when to teach, and when to test.

No Child Left Behind has raised math scores, but those scores are coming at a real price.

Okay, I'll stop now :)

I have a real problem with this testing thing as well. My 3rd grade daughter was bawling the day before her testing started because her reading teacher told the class that the school had to go up 11% or else. Or else what?? Don't burden my child w/ your incompetence!

Because they are so busy teaching to the test, they are never taught science. Actually, my son's teacher told me the principal won't allow any science experiments--it takes too much time away from preparing for the test. UGH

I explained to my daughter that we do not care how she does. Do her best, but do not get stressed about it.

Just thought I'd throw my support in to you. I was kinda surprised to read the first comment. Wow. Did she not read the post where it said you volunteered in the classroom often and that you were PTA pres?

As for your other posts about being sad and stressed out, have you ever heard of the movie The Secret? You might consider watching it. It could possibly help. It talks about how we draw things to us--if we are consumed w/ negative ideas, they will continue to come our way. Happy thoughts--same thing.

I am not into new age stuff at all. My mom tends to be, and that's where I've seen it. I kinda think this movie is right on. If it helps you, I think that would be great. It has some pretty inspirational stories on there. Have you ever heard of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books? One of the creators is on there. It also has the story of a quadrapeligic sp? who was determined to walk in a year and did. I think he was featured on Larry King. Good luck to you. I'll say a pray. :)
